How position size is calculated

The formula is simple: Lots = Risk amount ÷ (Stop distance in pips × pip value of 1 lot). Example: $10,000 balance, 1% risk ($100), a 25-pip stop on EURUSD. One standard lot of EURUSD is worth about $10 per pip, so 100 ÷ (25 × 10) = 0.40 lots.

  • .../USD pairs (EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD): about $10 per pip per lot.
  • .../JPY pairs (USDJPY): about 1,000 ÷ rate dollars per pip per lot.
  • USD/... pairs (USDCHF, USDCAD): about 10 ÷ rate dollars per pip per lot.
  • Gold (XAUUSD): 1 lot = 100 oz; a $1 move in price is worth $100 per lot.

Contract sizes can differ between brokers; check your broker's contract specification before large trades. The calculator assumes a USD account.

What R means and why it matters

R is the amount you risk on a trade. If you risked $100 and made $180, the trade is +1.8R; if you were stopped out it is −1R. Measuring results in R lets you compare trades even when your position size changes, and shows whether a strategy works far more clearly than dollar amounts. TradeLog calculates R for every trade automatically.

Track your trades in R

To see how the risk you planned actually played out, log your trades. TradeLog imports them from your MT4/MT5 report or with auto-sync and shows what works by setup, session and mistake. Details: MT5/MT4 trading journal.
